Cockburn Gazette - - OPINION - Rick Lee - regional editor

CHRISTMAS is supposed to be a time of joy and goodwill. For many it is anything but. It can be a lonely time for those without family and friends. There are people who are housebound by illness or live far away from loved ones. Police expect the incidence of domestic violence to spike and many families face financial stress. Some low-income families struggle to provide simple toys for their children. Other parents face the consequences of maxing out the credit cards. If you are one of the lucky ones who can spend time with the special people in your life, do not take the holidays for granted. Savour the time you spend together. It is not about material possessions. It is about connection with other people. Be generous. Do something simple for a neighbour or even a stranger who needs help. Speak kindly. Let others know how much you appreciate them. It won’t cost anything but it will be worth a great deal.
