ADVENT EXPLAINED

Cockburn Gazette - - OPINION -

WRITER Suzanne Hanley has asked “What is Advent?”.

Did St John’s Fremantle mean Advent Carols or Christmas Carols when St Patrick’s Basilica choir joined with our own in singing carols last Sunday?

No, it was not a mistake; we did mean to say Advent.

Advent (= coming) is a fourweek season of preparation leading up to Christmas.

Each year Christians get ready to celebrate the myriad comings of God in human history, the coming of God in Christ’s birth in Bethlehem, and the “second” or “final” coming when Christ will be all in all – in other words, when God’s justice and peace and love will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

We wish Suzanne and all readers a hope-filled Advent, a happy and joyful Christmas and many blessings in the New Year. FATHER DAVID WOOD, Rector, Parish of Fremantle.
