Approval for new tavern

Cockburn Gazette - - NEWS - Bryce Luff

A NEW tavern will be built in Yangebup after the project was given the green light by Cockburn Council.

The $5 million development, to be built on the northeastern side of the Beeliar Road and Durnin Avenue roundabout, will include a restaurant, bars, alfresco areas, a bottle shop and 185 car bays.

The tavern is backed by the team behind the Quarie Bar and Brasserie in Hammond Park.

During a deputation to the council on Thursday, developer Daniel Correia said they were looking to replicate the success at a new site.

“It’s a formula we think works in this environment and is supported by the local residents in Hammond Park,” he said. “It’s a familyfocused environment.”

A total of 117 submissions were made during last month’s consultation period. Of those, 43 objected and 74 were supportive.

A petition objecting to the proposal was signed by 65 people.

Ten of those signatures came from people living more than one kilometre from the development site and 15 were gathered from people outside Cockburn.

Objections centred on the likelihood of increased traffic, crime, drunkenness and noise, as well as the proximity to homes, the local primary school and childcare centre.

A deputation by two local residents reiterated those points, adding that there are already a number of liquor outlets along Beeliar Drive.

Others in support of the project said it would be a great addition for Yangebup and would mean less need to travel outside the area to visit a similar venue.

In a report to councillors on Thursday, a City officer said the project should be backed because it was compatible with local zoning and town planning scheme provisions.

“It is also considered that the development will contribute to the greater sustainability of the local environment through a stronger sense of community and local identity,” the report reads.
