Anticipation builds for project
WORKS PUSH ON IN 2016
WITH a $109 million sport and recreation centre at its heart, Cockburn Central West (CCW) could be Cockburn’s most anticipated project.
The facility, a partnership between the City of Cockburn, Fremantle Dockers, Curtin University and State and Federal governments, will include outdoor and indoor pools, waterslides, recovery pools and a water playground.
There will be training and administration facilities for the Dockers, a sports shop, community function spaces and an AFL-standard oval.
Those keen to take advantage of what will be a world class facility should not have too long to see things take shape.
The facility is 15 per cent complete after six months of work following the official sod-turning ceremony in July.
Cockburn’s recreation and community safety manager Rob Avard said works were set to ramp next year. “The building will be substantially completed by December 2016,” he said.
“By mid-2016 the pools will be in the ground, the roof of the building will be on and the oval will have a very good cover of grass.”
Mr Avard said builder Brookfield Multiplex is contracted to hand the building over to the City in March 2017.
“With final fit-out and commissioning, the City expects the building to be open to the public in early to mid-2017,” he said.
In addition to the recreational facility, more than 1000 apartments for more than 2000 residents will also be built at CCW.
Land will be released subject to demand, with Landcorp’s general manager for the metropolitan region Luke Willcock telling the Gazette: “CCW will be a 10 to 15-year project, with development initially focused around the recreation facility as well as the existing Cockburn Central Town Centre development.”
Stage one civil works began in August and should be finished by April.
It includes 12 lots, roads and landscaping to complement the Cockburn Central town centre.
A significant amount of revegetation and nature play equipment will be installed in and around the existing wetland.
