Parents who dig kids’ fun get turn

Cockburn Gazette - - OPINION -

A NEW archaeological program starting up in Bibra Lake is proof that kids do not get to have all the fun.

Sue Carter, a veteran of more than 20 years in archaeological research and cultural heritage, started junior programs from the Cockburn Wetlands Centre midway through 2015.

But parents attending the Junior Archaeologist Club wanted to take part too, so a new class was set up.

“Naked Archaeology: Uncovering the Facts gives me the opportunity to educate, share information, share my knowledge and passion and reinforce a sense of place and belonging within a community,” Ms Carter said.

“This includes meaningful communication and developing innovative ways of protecting and caring for our heritage, and bridging the gap between heritage, archaeology and the community.”

Ms Carter said the programs helped grow knowledge of the area.

“They bring people together, as well as captivate and inspire them to engage in sociocultural collaboration, and highlighting a sense of place and belonging,” she said.
