MELVILLE’S mixed bag in the Water Polo WA Premier League continued at the weekend with the Saints winning but the Sharks slipping to a narrow defeat.

In the second last round of the 201516 season the Sharks lost 10-13 to the league-leading City Beach Bears while Saints eased past Phantom Skulls 16-7, both games played at Bicton Pool.

The Sharks’ loss means they fall further behind the second-placed Dolphins but they do remain third with 10 wins and eight losses.

The Bears got off to a fast start against the Sharks leading 4-1 early in the second quarter and then 11-6 early in the third but the Melville team never gave in and ended up only losing by three.

James Fannon scored three goals for the Sharks and Tom Prior added two.

Meanwhile, the Saints’ win was their sixth of the season but they remain in second last position a game and-a-half behind the fourth-placed Skulls with just one match remaining.

The Saints started strongly, leading the Skulls 5-2 early in the second period. It was virtually all over as a contest by three quarter-time with the Saints up 12-5.

The regular season wraps up this weekend with a Melville derby, the Saints taking on the Sharks from 2.30pm on Saturday at Bicton Pool.

The women's Marlins return from a bye to take on the City Beach Bears, also at Bicton Pool starting at 4pm.
