AUBIN Grove resident Jodie Carlyon is not one to shy away from a challenge, or a tough decision.

In 2013, the married mother of two was advised she had 21 non-cancerous lumps in her breasts.

She had surgery to remove 16 of them, but within six months she was informed the lumps had grown back in bigger numbers.

She was offered a couple of options, but with concerns they might be hiding something more sinister, Ms Carlyon made the decision to have a double mastectomy.

“My final decision was made because I couldn’t stand the thought of chancing the ongoing surgery,” she said.

“To keep a check on all that was going on I had to have an ultrasound every six months.

“In the end I weighed it all up and the stress of wondering how long it would be between surgeries and the worry of ‘what if a more worrisome lump was hiding under those that I already had’ wasn’t worth it.

“The best option that I could see was to have the mastectomy.”

Today, the Success Primary School education assistant is in great health.

Her next quest is the Rottnest Channel Swim, a 19.7km open water swim from Cottesloe Beach to the popular tourist island this Saturday.

Ms Carlyon has completed the swim three times before, but as part of a team.

“This will be my first solo crossing so my expectations aren’t too high,” she said.

“I keep saying I just want to touch the sand on the other side. I am very excited and can’t believe it is so close now.”

Leading into the swim, Ms Carlyon set herself a goal to raise $20,000 for the McGrath Foundation; as of last week she had raised $20,700.

“I thought they were the most appropriate cause because they place care nurses,” she said.
