LAST year was a record for organ donations in Australia, the organ donation registry has reported. There were 435 dead organ donors, which resulted in 1303 organ transplant procedures. A total of 1483 organs were transplanted, saving the lives of 1241 people. It was a growth of 61 per cent in the donation rate since 2009 when a national reform program was introduced. Australia’s growth was higher than Spain (51 per cent) and the United Kingdom (39 per cent) at the same stage of their reform program. The breakdown was NSW 127; Victoria 126; Queensland 72; South Australia 42; WA 42; Australian Capital Territory 13; Tasmania 9 and the Northern Territory 4. Since 2009, 7250 people have received donated organs. Just think of the joy that has brought to so many families.
