Fire station in limbo

Cockburn Gazette - - NEWS -

THE Success fire station site will remain as is for the foreseeable future.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) closed the Hammond Road station in November 2014 after a fourth firefighter in six years was diagnosed with kidney cancer.

Last June, Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Wayne Gregson said firefighters would not be asked to return to the site after testing failed to find a link between the site and those cancer cases.

Nine months on and DFES south coastal Superintendent Greg Feeney says the future of the site is yet to be locked in.

“DFES has no immediate plans for the Success fire station. Its future is under consideration,” he said.

City of Cockburn planning and development services director Daniel Arndt said the City’s preference was for the site to be in- cluded in the surrounding Success Regional Recreation reserve, from which it was originally excised.

“This would enable the land to be used for additional netball courts and car parking,” he said.

Career firefighters based there were moved to the Cockburn Volunteer Emergency Services building on Poletti Road after the former site was closed. They share that building with the Cockburn SES and South Coogee Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade.

Supt Feeney said the partnership had worked well and would likely continue for another two years.

“Potential sites are being investigated to establish a new career fire station in the Cockburn area to replace the old Success fire station,” he said.

“Career firefighters will be based at the Cockburn Volunteer Emergency Services complex until a new facility is developed.

“The identification of a new site and construction of a new facility is expected to take about two years.”
