Ice cream a bit fishy

MOVE over vanilla, choco­late and straw­berry; there is a unique ice cream craze in Fre­man­tle while the weather is still hot.

Tucked away on the wa­ter of the Fre­man­tle Fish­ing Boat Har­bour is the Kailis’ Fish Mar­ket Cafe, home to some of the best fish and chips in Fre­man­tle.

While many would ex­pect fish and chips to come on a plate and re­quire the use of a knife and fork, owner Ge­orge Kailis has taken the quin­tes­sen­tial Freo dish and turned it into an ice cream flavour, com­plete with fish bat­ter sprin­kled on top.

Diner Geral­dine Roxburgh, who taste tested the ice cream with her friends Sheila Row­ley and Muriel Sut­ton, said she never would have imag­ined fish and chip flavoured ice cream be­ing a thing.

“Hav­ing tasted it, it’s ac­tu­ally very nice,” she said.

“The bat­ter gives it a great crunch.

“I think peo­ple might be un­sure about it un­til they try it, but I would def­i­nitely rec­om­mend it.”

Ac­cord­ing to staff, it is a flavour that is grow­ing into a lo­cal favourite among vis­i­tors to the cafe.
