The event, where participants from all over raced their creations down a 150m track, was run to promote the town centre and raise funds for the eating disorder ward at Princess Margaret Hospital.

A group from the City of Cockburn Youth Centre had weeks of hard work pay off when they competed in three races, earning themselves an effort award.

Cockburn youth services program and activities officer Cory Arms, who was the team’s chief racing mechanic, said it had taken six weeks to put the cart together using reused and upcycled odds and ends and donated material.

“The young people really enjoyed coming up with ideas for the billy cart and then creating it,” he said.

“They have learnt hands-on skills and about working as a team, plus it’s just been good old fashioned fun.”
