Road rage attacker ‘can expect jail’

Cockburn Gazette - - NEWS - Bryce Luff

THE Singleton man charged with a road rage attack on the Kwinana Freeway in October will be sentenced next month.

Anwar Hautapu appeared in Fremantle Magistrates Court last Tuesday morning and pleaded guilty to charges of assault occasioning bodily harm and criminal damage.

The magistrate told the 29year-old he could “expect a term of imprisonment for the matter” during his sentencing hearing on May 10.

Hautapu was a passenger in a black Holden Astra that was being driven aggressively after an incident with a Cockburn grandmother on the freeway HAMILTON HILL on-ramp in Success in October.

After entering the freeway, the Astra pulled up beside the Ford Fiesta being driven by the 56-year-old woman.

Police said Mr Hautapu leaned out of the window, yelled abuse at the woman and threw something at her car.

He was filmed by the victim leaving his car and approaching her vehicle, shouting abuse and attempting to open her driver’s door.

He then punched the driver’s window, shattering the glass and striking the victim on the right shoulder, causing minor scratches.

Glass was spread throughout the victim’s car. He then walked back to the Holden, which was driven off.

Hautapu was arrested on March 1, a day after communi aired footage of the incident taken on the victim’s mobile phone.

His lawyer requested mediation be held between Hautapu and the victim, but the magistrate said that would “simply re-traumatise the victim”.
