Cockburn Gazette - - OPINION -

THIS National Diabetes Week from July 10-16, Diabetes WA is raising awareness of the importance for people with all types of diabetes to take care of their feet.

Each year 4400 Australians with diabetes will undergo a lower limb amputation due to diabetes-related complications. It is estimated that with early detection and appropriate treatment, 85 per cent of these cases could have been prevented.

Diabetes can cause nerve damage and loss of circulation, meaning injuries to the feet often go unnoticed and are very slow to heal.

So make sure to put your best foot forward and reduce your risk. Learn the six steps to caring for your feet at www.dia, or call 1300 136 588 to book an individual consultation with a diabetes educator.

ANDREW WAGSTAFF, CEO, Diabetes WA, Subiaco.
