Metro Men U-16 score bronze
WA’S Under-16 Metro Men’s team, coached by Munster’s Tyrone Thwaites, claimed bronze at the Australian Junior Championships in Victoria last week.
WA claimed third with a 69 to 55 win over Queensland North.
Cockburn’s Zachary Harris and Derek Igbenoba and Lakeside’s Benjamin Johnson were among the squad returning home with a medal.
Igbenoba scored eight points in the bronze medal match, with Harris scoring six. Johnson did not trouble the scorers.
Luke Jackson led the scoring for WA with 17 points.
The team’s assistant coaches included Rockingham’s Andrew Cooper and Cockburn’s Fleur SUPPORTED BY ORANGE AUTOS McIntyre. Cockburn’s Yin Leng was team manager.
The win wrapped up an impressive tournament for the team and fulfilled an expectation from Thwaites’ pre-tournament that he had a squad good enough to return home with a medal.
His side claimed Group B by going undefeated in six matches.
That included a win over tournament runners-up Victoria Country.
WA’s only loss came against that side 62-59 in the semi final.
The tournament was won by Victoria Metro, who defeated Victoria Country 76 to 67.
WA Country finished 13th.
Here’s how their tournament played out for WA’s Metro team:
Round 1: 75 to 74 win over NSW Metro.
Round 2: 82 to 64 win over Tasmania.
Round 3: 74 to 59 win over SA Metro.
