Cockburn Gazette - - OPINION - Lisa Thomas - Reporter

A THIRD WA-based football team is a far-fetched idea, but one that could save the Subiaco we know and love from becoming another concrete jungle. The City of Subiaco is trying to find ideas to save the oval and avoid the State Government turning this historical sporting landmark into highrise apartments. Subiaco is known for its leafy streets and green open space, so to lose Kitchener Park and the oval would be detrimental to the suburb. A heritage listing application is currently being processed with the Heritage Council, but if it’s unsuccessful, will a third football team be possible? Support for football in WA is among the strongest in Australia, with crowds at Subiaco Oval falling just behind Melbourne, so could it work? A new team could open up membership opportunities, and also give people living north of the river a chance to have our very own team to support.
