Trading hours welcomed

Cockburn Gazette - - NEWS -

COCKBURN Gateway has embraced an extra 50 trading hours in the lead-up to Christmas.

From December 5, general retail stores will be allowed to open from 7am on weekdays, with major retailers also having the option to open from 7am on Saturdays and 8am on Sundays and close at 6pm on weekends and public holidays. The extra hours will run until January 3, with the State Government also approving extended trading for Australia Day.

Perron Group property investments general manager Andrew Byars said the extra hours were a positive for both shoppers and retailers.

“Cockburn Gateway Shopping City supports deregulation of trading hours to provide our customers with more choices as to when they can shop,” he said.

“It’s a positive for retailers, giving them the opportunity to open when customers would like to shop. If further deregulated shopping hours are introduced, the centre will be open for all possible trading hours.

“We see it as a positive for working families and busy people, giving them extra time to shop.”

Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) of Western Australia chief executive Deidre Willmott said WA’s retail trading laws needed to be fully deregulated. “We know that shoppers relish the opportunity to get their Christmas gifts and holiday bargains during the season’s extended shopping hours, particularly on Sunday mornings, and this is an opportunity which CCI thinks should be afforded to consumers and businesses throughout the rest of the year,” she said.

“What Western Australians really want this Christmas is for someone to set shopping free – WA still has Australia’s worst retail trading laws, with consumers and businesses caught up in bizarre and antiquated rules about when they can shop and what they can buy.
