Sweet deal struck to save quokkas

Cockburn Gazette - - NEWS -

THE quokka has been immortalised in chocolate just in time for Easter.

The Rottnest Foundation, Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) and Margaret River Chocolate Company (MRCC) have combined to create Chokka the Quokka, with $2 from each sale going towards the Foundation’s efforts to conserve the quokka.

RIA environment, heritage and parks general manager Holly Knight said the initiative aimed to conserve the quokka populations on Rottnest and in the South-West.

“Recent bushfires in the south had a significant impact on the quokka population on the mainland,” Ms Knight said.

The MRCC presented $5000 to the conservation project at a Quokka Symposium held in Fremantle on Thursday.

This follows on from the company’s contribution last year to a World Wildlife Fund project that assessed the South-West quokka population after the December 2015 bushfires.

Ms Knight said Chokka the Quokka was expected to raise about $10,000 a year for quokka conservation.
