An­zac op­tions aplenty

SER­VICES and marches will en­sure lo­cals have op­por­tu­ni­ties to pay their re­spects this An­zac Day.

The Fremantle War Me­mo­rial Dawn Ser­vice at Mon­u­ment Hill will be­gin at 5.50am and there will be a sec­ond ser­vice at the Fallen Sol­diers’ Me­mo­rial in North Fremantle from 9am.

The an­nual An­zac Day march will set off from the Es­planade Re­serve at 10.15am and will weave through Marine Ter­race, Col­lie, Pak­en­ham, High and Mar­ket streets be­fore go­ing along South Ter­race and down Es­sex Street on its re­turn to the Es­planade.

The City of Fremantle will have a por­trait pho­tog­ra­phy project at the Es­planade, where in­ter­ested march at­ten­dees can have their head­shot taken and re­ceive on the spot prints.

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pet­titt said it was an op­por­tu­nity to re­mem­ber those who had served Aus­tralia, both past and pre­sent.

“Fremantle had a very im­por­tant role to play dur­ing World War I and World War II as for many sol­diers and sailors, in­clud­ing the 849 who are hon­oured on Mon­u­ment Hill, be­ing in Freo would be the last time many of them would see their fam­i­lies,” he said.

“The City is com­mit­ted to en­sur­ing Fremantle’s wartime sig­nif­i­cance is com­mem­o­rated and we wel­come the com­mu­nity to join us on April 25 to par­tic­i­pate in our an­nual Dawn Ser­vice and march through the streets of Fremantle.”

In Cock­burn, the RSL will host a Dawn Ser­vice at the Hamil­ton Hall Me­mo­rial Hall at 5.30am.

The Hall is on the cor­ner of Rock­ing­ham Road and Car­ring­ton Street.

The Main Pa­rade and Ser­vice will take place a few hours later, with marchers de­part­ing the Cock­burn RSL on Fred­er­ick Road for the Me­mo­rial Hall at 9.45am.

The march will travel un­der po­lice es­cort, with mu­sic pro­vided by the Perth Hills and Wheat­belt Band.

The RSL’s an­nual An­zac Youth Pa­rade and ser­vice will take place on April 28.

Stu­dents will be es­corted from the City of Cock­burn’s ad­min­is­tra­tion build­ing in Spear­wood to the RSL Me­mo­rial Park by the City’s Pipe Band, 10th Light Horse Re-en­act­ment Group and the WA Po­lice at 9.30am
