CLASSIC AT OLD MILL
ONE of Australia’s most iconic books will be transformed on the stage in a new Old Mill Theatre production.
A bumper cast of local actors, including University of Notre Dame student Rhiannon Cary and Hamilton Hill resident Cally Zanic, will bring Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet characters and issues of isolation and sexuality to life this month.
Cary said she was enjoying tackling the character of Hat Lamb.
“There is a risk of the scenes coming across as robotic or too rehearsed, so I need to make them as moving and realistic as possible,” she said.
“It will also be interesting to explore the concept of being part of such a big family, given my own family is very small, but the cast are so warm and welcoming that it has been a joy working alongside them so far.
“Cloudstreet appealed because it’s a wonderfully written play that exhibits the heart and soul of Perth and what it means to be an Australian.
“I was immediately intrigued by the way I could relate to the emotions and lives of these people although the play is set decades before I was even born – it’s testament to the way Winton captured the essence of life in Australia.”
Cloudstreet will be at the Old Mill Theatre in South Perth from June 16 to July 1.
