Dockers point the way

STUDENTS from four WA primary schools got some future career advice when they visited the Fremantle Dockers at their Cockburn Central base recently.

Players Cameron McCarthy, Brady Grey, Lara Filocamo and club staff took the 48 Year 6 students on a tour of their facilities and gave them some insights into the different career paths available at a professional sporting club.

The tour was part of the 12 Buckets University Aspiration Program. Chief executive Travis Fitch said they aimed to inspire children from low socio-economic areas to continue their education and follow their dreams into any career they chose.

“The program doesn’t seek to push students towards university above all else but rather aims to show them that higher education is within their reach,” he said.

“Ultimately, we want those students who may require a bit of extra support to be able to gain the skills, support and connections needed to build a strong future.”

Grey said it was exciting to show off their facilities to the kids.

“As AFL players we have an opportunity to have an impact on young people, especially to those students who came to visit today,” he said.

“Some of the journeys shared today were really powerful and if some of the kids take something out of that, then you would say that is an accomplishment for us as players and hopefully it has inspired the students to chase their dreams.”
