Cockburn Gazette - - OPINION -

I am calling on the politicians and people of conscience – whichever party they represent to apply pressure on the Prime Minister (who claims to be a Christian) – to take compassionate action now regarding the situation at Manus.

Those refugees and asylum seekers on Manus have suffered tremendously for four years.

They fled persecution in their homeland (the likes of which most people here in Australia cannot imagine) only to be further persecuted by the Australian Government and the Papua New Guinea local people.

I remind the politicians and the community that the Papua New Guinea Commissioner of Police has said he cannot guarantee the refugees’ safety should they do as the Australian government is forcing them to, and move into the community.

The Australian Government is responsible for their ongoing persecutions and will be culpable for the outcome of this latest humanitarian crisis.

I ask you to put yourself in the refugees’ situation. They have repeatedly been targeted, shot at, attacked and injured and killed by Papua New Guinea locals and authorities.

So it is understandable that they are afraid to move into the community with no protection.

I repeat: the Papua New Guinea Commissioner of Police has said he cannot guarantee the refugees safety should they do as the government is forcing them to – move into the community. Bring them here to Australia.

They have suffered enough . ANDREA CALLAGHAN, Hilton
