As­bestos find sus­pends work

AS­BESTOS has been found at the for­mer Work­ers Club on Henry Street in Fre­man­tle.

The de­mo­li­tion site has been sus­pended since Tues­day af­ter com­mu­nity mem­bers raised con­cerns about as­bestos dust and chunks over the long week­end.

The Lance Holt Pri­mary School was shut on Tues­day as a pre­cau­tion but was re­opened on Wed­nes­day af­ter it was deemed safe.

City of Fre­man­tle chief ex­ec­u­tive Phillip St John said four solid sam­ples of rub­ble were taken from the site and tested for traces of as­bestos.

“Two tested pos­i­tive and two were neg­a­tive,” he said.

“Soil sam­ples from the site were also neg­a­tive.

“The de­mo­li­tion per­mit is­sued to the de­vel­op­ers by the City of Fre­man­tle in­cludes spe­cific con­di­tions around dust sup­pres­sion and the safe re­moval of as­bestos.

“Work on the site will re­main sus­pended un­til the City is sat­is­fied those con­di­tions are be­ing met.”
