New live music venue to open in Freo.

AN opportunity to do something different has led to the former venue Norfolk Basement revamping as The Aardvark as a new music venue in Fremantle.

The venue will hold its official opening on Thursday. Promoter Mark Spillane said he really wanted to focus on the music side of things.

“We really want people to feel at home like the third place – you have your house, work and then third place where you go and socialise,” he said. “There is no other small music venue in the central of Freo of that size. It’s the size where an east coast band would do their first tour play at.”

The bar will serve food such as pizza, steak sandwiches and serves a range of drinks from beer to mulled wine to aged bourbon. A can-only bar will be open during busy periods.

Mr Spillane said the venue had a long history of music performances: “Tame Impala used to rehearse down here, Presets have done.

“We want to see the venue continue for as long as we can. “We want original live music but we are keen to make sure to have gender diversity across the lineups.”
