Nominate a legend
NOMINATING a friend, family member, colleague or yourself for a 2019 Western Australian of the Year Award is a quick and simple process – just ask former winner and nominator Fiona Stanley.
Professor Stanley nominated 2018 Western Australian of the Year Mike Daube and said the nomination process was quick and simple.
“Mike is one of the most effective public health advocates in the world. He has probably done more than anyone to reduce tobacco consumption globally, and particularly in Australia,” she said.
“He has thus prevented millions of premature deaths and complications of smoking.
“He has also tackled alcohol, obesity and other major public health problems, and yet he has not been properly recognised and we thought that he would be a wonderful Australian of the Year.”
Prof Stanley, who was nominated by a child health nurse for her award, said the group of people who got together to nominate Prof Daube was “thrilled” when he was announced the winner.
“I keep thinking of what he will do now he has this platform,” she said.
“And if he becomes Australian of the Year, that will be wonderful for him and for WA and for public health.”
Celebrate WA chairman Michael Anghie said the awards celebrated the very best achievements of West Australians, whether they had an impact locally or further afield.
