Celebrating our vollies
WELCOME to National Volunteer Week, a celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our incredible West Australian volunteers under this year's theme “Making a world of difference”.
This year is a particularly important milestone as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of this significant week.
From May 20-26, thousands of events will be held across the country to say thank you to the six million Australians who volunteer their time and the weeklong celebration will include breakfasts, morning/afternoon teas and luncheons, as well as open days, award ceremonies, picnics, forums and training sessions.
Here in WA, we are fortunate enough to enjoy one of the highest participation rates in volunteering in our country, with four out of five West Australians donating an average of over 3.5 hours per week.
Recognising our volunteers has never been more important, especially when we consider the enormous contribution they make in representing three-quarters of our not-for-profit workforce.
Without the generosity of volunteers, our communities would grind to a halt.
As the peak body for volunteering in WA, we proudly represent 600,000 volunteers and more than 700 volunteer-involving organisations in our State and extend across all areas of Australian society, from the arts, education, emergency services, sports and environment to health, community welfare, aged care and disability services.
These are the West Australians that are making a world of difference.
In WA, we are promoting this message by lighting up some of our state's most significant buildings red. The locations of the buildings, including Parliament House, Perth Concert Hall and The Bell Tower, are on our website volunteering wa.org.au and we encourage you to take photos and hashtag us at #NVW2019
We will also be honouring some outstanding West Australians at the WA Volunteer of the Year Awards to be held this week at the Crown Perth, with support from our award sponsors Bankwest, Community News, Department of Communities, Lotterywest, Office of Multicultural Interests, NeonLogic, Silver Chain and YMCA WA.
We invite all West Australians to join us in thanking our WA volunteers, and encourage anyone with even an hour to spare to be inspired to make a difference to their world and someone else’s by searching for a volunteering position at volunteeringwa.org.au.
