FREMANTLE is set to lose another sports club after the Fremantle Roosters were awarded tenancy of a new reserve in Cockburn.

At their June meeting, City of Cockburn councillors passed a recommendation to award winter tenancy of Treeby’s new sporting reserve to Fremantle Roosters Rugby League Club.

The Roosters would be the third club in as many years to move from Fremantle to Cockburn, following the Fremantle Dockers’ move to Cockburn ARC in 2017 and Fremantle Hockey Club’s upcoming move to the nearly complete hockey facility in South Lake.

Cockburn recreation and community safety manager Travis Moore said they were one of the fastestgrowing areas in WA, providing sports clubs with an opportunity to grow their membership base.

“The City is committed to providing high-standard sport and recreation facilities; this can be seen in the Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Plan, which has identified more than $209 million in new sporting developments over the next 15 years,” he said.

A City of Fremantle spokesman said they were working hard to upgrade local facilities for the more than 50 sporting clubs using Fremantle parks, reserves and facilities.

“In recent years, the City has made significant investments to upgrade our sporting facilities, such as the renovation of the grandstand and changerooms at Gilbert Fraser Reserve and the expansion of the cricket nets at Stevens Reserve,” he said.

“Construction is under way on the new Fremantle Park Sports and Community Centre, which will be home to the Fremantle Tennis Club and Fremantle Bowling Club, while the State Government has invested $1.8 million to build the new netball pavilion at Frank Gibson Park.

“The City is also planning for the construction of a new clubhouse at the Fremantle Public Golf Course, and longer term the redevelopment of Fremantle Oval to accommodate both East Fremantle and South Fremantle WAFL clubs.”
