Only Connect is an annual music festival organised by Norwegian promoter nyMusikk. Since 2012, design duo Non-Format has designed the promotional material for the festival, producing a visual theme that can be extended across posters, programs, T-shirts and the like.
This year, events were divided between two venues in central Oslo: Sentralen - a grand space within a former bank; and Skippergata, a more modest old warehouse building. To convey the contrast between the two venues, Non-Format - in collaboration with ANTI - created a modular illustration of an Ionic column, found in abundance at the Sentralen venue. “We then deconstructed it to represent the Skippergata venue,” explains NonFormat’s Jon Forss. “We chose green for the column - a reference to the green marble found at Sentralen - and then contrasted it with red for the scattered modular elements representing the more avant-garde lineup set to perform at Skippergata.”
Establishing a well-balanced hierarchy of illustration and information is always tricky, Forss admits. “For example, there’s always a need to display the list of performers on the poster, but our attempts to keep that list quite small are usually met with a certain amount of resistance.”
Plus, the program is written in both English and Norwegian so the pair have to run the listing twice. “To help make sense of it all we have two front covers, with the English text running for half of the program and then you can flip the program over and start again a second time in Norwegian.”
