BRAND­ING FOR FILM FES­TI­VAL

De­signer Leo G Franchi was called upon to cre­ate graph­ics and brand­ing for Ar­gen­tinian film fes­ti­val Cine a la Vista, the only in­ter­na­tional film fes­ti­val in which the win­ning films are cho­sen by teenagers, now in its sixth year.

“The trick­i­est part of the project was work­ing out how to de­sign for a young fes­ti­val while also at­tract­ing a gen­eral au­di­ence,” ex­plains Franchi. “We didn’t want to con­fuse peo­ple and cre­ate the im­pres­sion that the fes­ti­val is only for teenagers, or that the films only deal with teenage themes; the fes­ti­val wel­comes all dif­fer­ent nar­ra­tives and is touch­ing and ap­peal­ing to a wide au­di­ence.”

Franchi hit upon the idea of mod­ern Saul Bass-style graph­ics as a sim­ple and di­rect treat­ment that would speak to young­sters, while the clas­sic aes­thetic would ap­peal to ev­ery­one.

“I al­ways try to work in a mixed-me­dia style, a kind of col­lage of ana­log and dig­i­tal el­e­ments,” he says. “I like works that give you a tan­gi­ble sen­sa­tion – you can touch them – and this is why I de­cided to cre­ate ev­ery­thing with pa­per-cut shapes.”
