As mentioned earlier, the first wave of analogue synthesisers were often used as effects processors. This was due in some small part to the fact that synths themselves often had terrible tuning issues! It was also a slick way to create something wholly new. Moog’s Minimoog, EMS’ VCS3 (and its suitcased twin, the Synthi A) and ARP’s 2600 were all favourites for this sort of timbral tomfoolery. Many of today’s plugin clones can be opened on an effects bus for precisely this reason. If you have one, you owe it to yourself to give it a try.
