The annual KVR Developer Challenge is under way as we go to press, bringing with it loads of new and free plugins which will be judged by forum members. You can read more about it at www.kvraudio.com. In the meantime, the competition has given us plenty to play with this issue, including this little beauty from Digital Systemic Emulations, who are also responsible for the second entry on our list.

Syncla-X is a virtual re-imagining of the FM synthesis unit that fuelled New England Digital’s Synclavier II. It offers a quartet each of carriers and modulators, and an eightharmonic generator. Loads of ADSR-style envelope generators are included, as are a pair of LFOs. Velocity sensitivity and Mono/ Poly modes are provided as well. Sounds may be spiced up with flanger and bit reduction effects. Voices are individually pannable too. Given that the original cost as much as a small jet, the fact that we can have a Synclavier for free is a real boon.

Unlike many SynthEdit creations, Syncla-X is cross-platform and compatible with 64-bit environments. VST, VST3 and Audio Units versions are available. Grab it and live the high life of an 80s pop star!
