With the drums and strings establishing the feel of the track, it’s time for the first of several pianos to enter the fray. “We layered in a piano doing the same chords as the strings, to develop the track,” Ian explains. “The chord is reversed into itself, so you’ve got the piano playing the chord, and then at the end it reverses, which gives it a nice ‘swell’. That comes in after 16 bars, and then we’ve done a little transition FX with the piano. We’ve bounced one of the chords and put some effect on it, some modulation, maybe a bit of reverb, and then reversed it, just to help with the transition into the next section.”
