Sourcing samples

Computer Music - - Producer Masterclass / Make Music Now -

With a decade of production experience behind them, it’s no surprise to learn that Tom and Ian are well equipped in terms of samples and soundware. Tom tells us how their sourcing of sounds has changed over the years. “We’ve been building up a bank of samples for ten years, so it’s a selection of old Loopmasters CDs, and swapping your sample bank with other producer mates, downloading bits and bobs online. We’ve recorded some of our own stuff as well: atmospheres we record on our phones… anything, really, that we think can work in a track. Nowadays, we don’t tend to download huge sample packs any more. We’ve got a lot anyway, but we now use a website called Splice, where you can just go through hundreds of packs and pick one or two things. We’ll pull the site up – or pull the plugin up – and just listen through different drum samples with the track playing.”
