2. Isolating and customising a kick from our loop

-

1 To begin, we’ll fire up Unfiltered Audio’s BYOME multieffect plugin on our drum loop’s channel. How about some rhythmic choppage to isolate the 4/4/ kick from the rest of the percussion in the loop? To do this, we load up a Tremolo (ie, volume modulator) module, with Shape set to Square at 1/4 Synced Rate. 2 There are still percussion hits creeping through our volume modulation, so we use a second Square-shaped Tremolo (this time set to 1/8 Rate) and a Noise Gate to remove these stray portions of the loop. The kick is now isolated, but it sounds rather flat… 3 We now use a Compressor module, with medium Attack settings, to give our kick signal some front-end punch. And for a slab of sub-bass enhancement, we dial in a 50Hz resonant HP filter boost courtesy of BYOME’s Basic Filter module. Once done, we render this kick to audio and move on.
