When it comes to genre ‘correctness’, the sound of the kick drum is as important as the notes it plays. For example, house calls for depth and weight; hip-hop demands phatness and punch; a DnB kick should slam like a sledgehammer… you get the idea. However, don’t be afraid to experiment with kicks that appear ‘wrong’ for a given track. Who knows what new flavours you might cook up by mixing, say, the dark, subby tail of a techno kick with the clicky attack transient of a heavy metal drum sample?
