Web soundspot.audio Format PC/Mac, VST/AU/AAX SoundSpot’s new saturation plugin offers six distinct distortion styles – Digital, Tube, Diode, Linear Fold, Zero Squared and Rectify – dialled in with the Drive knob and doubled down with the Destroy slider, which pushes the filth even further. Twin lowand high-pass filters shape the wet signal and can be locked to move in tandem for band-pass behaviour, while the Dark/Bright slider tilts the tonality as the name suggests. The ‘quadrant’ display incorporates a pan control and shows the pan position, intensity and frequency range of the distortion being applied (as defined by the filter settings) – it’s decidedly gimmicky and just fills the space, really.

What isn’t a contrivance, though, is the Movement section, wherein any and all front panel controls are open to modulation by as many user-defined (via unlimited breakpoints) LFOs as you feel like drawing. It’s this that takes the plugin beyond being ‘just another high-quality distortion effect’.

A rich palette of supremely effective distortion colours, and the modulation system makes it a powerful rhythmic sound design tool. Recommended, then, despite being £70 too dear.
