Computer Music

Get with the programmers

With Orbitron just released, we put developers JMG Sound under the spotlight (and it turns out we helped!)

- Jason Gibbins

How did you get into music and music production software?

JG “I first got into making music from my love of happy hardcore. I was fascinated by how it was made and how they had sampled records. I started using Rave eJay to make music, it progressed from there and didn’t stop! Back in the early days, I had a subscription to Computer Music for a long time and it is responsible for a lot of my progression and knowledge.”

What makes JMG Sound software stand out from the crowd?

JG “My main focus with JMG is the balance between power and speed. I try to create plugins that are innovative and feature-rich but which are also fast to use and intuitive. A great example of this is Hyperspace, where you can design reverb algorithms that sound amazing in just a few seconds.”

Aside from Orbitron – see right – what is your favourite JMG plug? JG “For me, it is Hyperspace. I’m very proud of this plugin – it was my first and while the graphics may not be everyone’s cup of tea, do not be fooled! The audio processing that is happening under the hood is second to none. I spent a long time evaluating and machine learning millions of algorithms and reverb production techniques. It’s packed full of features, mixing tools, creative special FX and the ability to create unique algorithms. If you have not yet tested it, please do, I’m convinced it will impress you.” [ We have and it did. A lot – Ed]

What are your five favourite plugins by other developers?

JG “My absolute favourites are Melda Production plugins, particularly MSoundFactory. Almost anything is possible with them. A few more include those by Cableguys, Scaler 2, DMG Audio, Tone2, HOFA, Sugar Bytes and Zynaptiq. Of course, I also really like my United Plugins colleagues’ work too.”

“is responsible for a lot of my progression and knowledge”

What would you like to see developed in terms of software?. JG “I am very interested in how AI could be used, like machine learning, neural networks and intelligent randomisation etc. It fascinates me and I’m intrigued by its potential.”

Do you have any music production advice?

JG “Don’t listen to your music too much while creating/producing, as you can lose the ability to hear it objectively. Work quickly and take regular breaks to allow your ears and brain to reset. Mix music at low volume levels, it reduces listening fatigue and helps you better hear things like balance, transients, masking and so on.”

What have you guys got planned for the future?

JG “I have many plugin ideas in the works. I tend to spend a lot of time developing ideas and refining them, adding and removing features as I use them in productions until I get to a place where a plugin is ready. One of my most exciting projects is a delay plugin. It will be an all-in-one type of delay for anything from vintage modelling to more innovative delays with many creative features.” unitedplugins.com/jmg-sound
