Vintage Synths
We’ve gone ‘vintage’ this issue, with two new synth packs and plenty of classic drum packs from the vault. First up, Robbie from Cyclick explains how to wrangle some magic from just one synth…
“Only one synth was used for this sample collection, the Jen SX1000 Synthetone. The SX1000 was a budget monosynth manufactured by the Italian company Jen (most famous for their Cry-Baby Super Wah pedal) in the late 1970s.
“It’s a very simple instrument with an analogue hybrid VCO/DCO (don’t ask!) that produces three waveforms: sawtooth, square and PWM. There is a single 12dB/oct low-pass filter with Resonance control, which will selfoscillate. There’s also a pink/white noise generator, Glide control, vibrato and two ADSRs, one for the VCF and the other for the VCA.
“I’ve been using this one for most of 20 years and, though it is no Model D or MS-20, it does produce a wide range of useful sounds and is all in all a fun instrument to play. It also really comes to life when it’s paired with pedals, so that’s what I did for this collection.”
