6. Modulation

-

Waveform includes a powerful and easy to use integrated modulation system that allows you to apply LFO-style control to any automatable plugin parameter. In the top right-hand corner next to the grey and red clip plugin objects you’ll see the orange Track Modifier object.

To get started, you simply drag this object onto the plugin you want to control and select the LFO button. This will then open a parameter list where you can choose the parameter to control. You’ll now see a small, animated red icon in the Inline mixer and Mixer panels.

Clicking on this icon highlights the plugin that’s being controlled and if you want to control multiple parameters in the same plugin or control more than one plugin from the same modifier, simply drag this small red icon onto the plugin and choose the additional parameters.

Now let’s apply modifiers to some of our plugins. First up, our Neutrino pad track. Drag the Modifier object onto the Level and Pan module then click on the LFO button. Now select Pan from the list of parameters. You’ll now have a red icon and the panning indicator is moving.

The Modifier is changing the panning but not in the way we want. Double click the red icon to open the Modifier window, check the shape is Sine and make it bipolar by selecting the +/- option. You’ll see the waveform is now above and below zero and our animated panning is now fully left to right.

Next up, we want the panning to be tempo synced but slow, so adjust the timing setting to 2 Bars. We also want the panning to be less extreme. The way to achieve this is using the Depth setting. First, reduce the overall depth, we’ve chosen about 0.33, and also adjust the offset, we’ve chosen about 0.34.

Our next target parameter is on our arpeggiated part. Drag the Modifier object onto the Arpeg track Collective synth module and click on the LFO button. This will open a massive list of potential parameters. Choose the filter Cutoff which is near the top of the list.

The Modifier includes stepped shapes, and we’ll use the 4 Steps Down option, so select this in the top left. Once again we need to activate the Bipolar setting with +/- button. We want the effect to be tempo-synced and repeat every bar, so select 1 Bar from the timing option.

The Modifier controls the synth filter cutoff and this needs tweaking. Mostly this is about adjusting the Depth and Offset and we have settings 0.38 and 0.34 respectively. One final thing we can do is set the LFO so it only triggers during playback. This is done by switching the running mode from Free to Transport.
