AUDIO EDITING FAVOURITES

MELODYNE

An industry standard tool for vocal editing. This is great for tweaking the tuning of a vocal recording to make sure everything is hitting all the right spots, but, as you’ll see in my video demo, the capabilities go much further than that. Want to alter the pitch to make a voice sound deeper? Want to change the formant to make the voice sound more male than female or vice versa? You can do that here. You can also use a whole range of tools to even out a shaky note, add a little vibrato where there is none or make a vocal sound a little more robotic than it initially was (as seemed to be all the rage in the late 90s/00s).

PAUL STRETCH

This is a free tool that I have been using for years and years! This actually comes as part of Audacity now, but you can also download standalone versions for PC, Linux and Mac. Paul Stretch gives you the ability to timestretch something to several times the length of the actual sound, at a high standard. If you’ve ever been in a position where you needed a note to be sustained just a little while longer, but your timestretching functionality has reached its limit and it starts sounding terrible, this is for you. But even better than that, you can stretch out sounds to create pads or atmospheric layers for your work.
