We explored the world of ‘future synths’ in 175 (March 2012), showing you how to create cutting-edge sounds with “instrument­s that are boldly looking to the future rather than trying to recreate past glories”. Of, course, some of the synths we were using — NI Massive, FXpansion Cypher and Cakewalk Z3TA+ 2 – are very much yesterday’s news now, illustrati­ng that even software that’s considered ‘the future’ will one day be consigned to the past…

One thing that hasn’t changed since then is the pentatonic scale — the subject of our Easy Guide to music theory. We also chatted to Dimitri From Paris, who confessed that his early remixes – created using little more than a cassette recorder – were “a bit shit”.
