Digital Waves
Oli Bell from Groove Criminals reveals how he came up with his first pack of waveform samples, this time of a digital nature…
“It’s all about waveforms this month and here we have concentrated on digital synths. We have sampled the basic waveforms from a handful of favourites, so you can feed these into your softsynths and samplers, process them and use them as the foundation for more complex sounds.
“As well as some modern classic digital synths like the always surprising Microfreak and our workhorse Virus -B, we have also included some waveforms from the Yamaha TX81Z, a 4-operator DX in rack form, and our Casio CZ-1000 which uses phase distortion synthesis.
“The Yamaha PSS-470 is a mini-key home keyboard with a very basic digital synth built in (and one of the first keyboards we ever owned back in the mists of time) and the Møffenzeef is a nifty drone synth with a small tabletop footprint.
“To go alongside the waveform samples we made some loops, including some of the Microfreak’s more interesting oscillator types like the Karplus Strong and some digital noise to top it all off.”
