Our monthly shake-of-thehead at our younger selves’ news choices…

-

We like to think that we’ve got a certain level of music-making ability, but we’ll concede that our MCing skills are distinctly lacking, so it was probably for the best that our hip-hop tutorial in April 2012 ( 176) focused exclusively on making an instrumental. Suffice to say, 808 kicks were very much in evidence.

In the reviews section, we took a look at Propellerhead’s Balance, a new audio interface from the makers of Reason. We called it a triumph, and noted that we

were “looking forward to the next offering from Propellerhead’s talented new hardware division.” We’re still waiting on that…

We also took a look at the iPad version of Lemur, the touchscreen controller that had originally been a £1,700 piece of dedicated hardware that was used by the likes of Daft Punk and Justice. The iOS app, meanwhile, cost just £35 – we’ll take that one, thanks.

Finally, in our burning question, we asked if DAWs shared too many ideas. The general consensus was that this was pretty much inevitable, and it’s fair to say that we’re still seeing developers taking ‘inspiration’ from each other to this day…
