HARDWARE SYNTH OR SOFTWARE PLUGIN?

It can be difficult to know what equipment is best for the music you’re making and possibly for the space you have. An important thing to remember is that there are, more often than not, plugin versions of classic synths. It may be best to trial these out before investing in hardware if you’re operating on a budget or haven’t had a chance to use the hardware in real life. There’s no doubt that hardware can be satisfying, especially when working on the fly, but give any purchase a lot of thought for how it will serve you in the long term.

RECORDING ELECTRIC BASS THROUGH DIGITAL INPUT

If you’re a bassist, you might just want to record a clean bass part rather than use keys. I’ll have another tutorial on this in a future issue, but it is nevertheless an easy way to go and still have access to a host of amp and effect emulators to get a particular sound you want. The bonus here is that on some DAWs, such as Logic Pro, you can convert an audio file into MIDI if needed, so you can still have the best of both worlds there. The same can be done in reverse – converting a MIDI performance into audio.
