3. Multi Panel

1

We mentioned the Multi system above. Now let’s see how we can use it to create more interesting sounds using J-60. Start by opening the Multi Panel using the icon in the top left. Then from the drop down menu select Initialize to create a fresh multi. 2

Let’s start by layering a couple of sounds. Select one of the slots, either by clicking its header or by using the A, B, C, D buttons above. Then click on the preset name display in the top bar to open the Browser and load a preset. We’ve chosen ‘Delicate Bowed String’. 3

Staying in the Browser, select a different multi part using the A, B, C, D buttons top left. Now select another sound. We’ve chosen ‘Love Scene Strings’. Now when we select the Multi Panel icon again we should have two sounds loaded. 4

The second sound is too loud so the first thing to do is turn that down using its Volume slider – we’ve set ours to about -10dB. The release is also too quick. With this part selected, we de-select the Multi icon to view the Synth Panel and here adjust the Amplitude Env release – roughly four seconds is good. 5

Next, adjust the velocity response. You can either use the slider at the righthand end or the Low and Hi Vel number entry. The slider has an upper and lower handle to set the limits. Here we’ve simply set the lower limit to about 65 for our second sound so it only begins to play as velocity becomes greater. 6

Finally, we can split the two sounds. Here we’ve set our breakpoint as B2 C3 and reset our second sound to full velocity response. For a bit of variation we’ve also adjusted the Tune setting of our second sound down an octave (-12.00), allowing us to play more useful pitch combinations.
