3. Sound creation basics

-

1

If you’ve used a Yamaha DX synth, then the terminology and sound construction in RYM2612 will feel pretty familiar. Let’s take things back to basics and construct some sounds from the ground up. To get started, load a fresh instance of RYM2612. This will load the Init preset. 2

RYM2612 uses four sine wave generators (called operators) and the way they’re combined is specified by the signal flow (Algorithm) over on the right. You have a choice of eight Algorithms and within the graphic, any operator that’s shaded white is an output operator. Its total level (TL) controls the audible output level. 3

Select Algorithm 8 and this is very easy to understand. Each operator is an output and if you adjust the TL control for each, then you’re essentially balancing the four operator levels. However, operators can also influence each other in the signal flow before reaching a final output operator. Try adjusting the operators in Algorithm 1 for example. 4

Each operator has envelope and pitch parameters. Pitch is adjusted using a multiplier and, by default, this sets integer amounts for octaves and other relevant harmonic intervals. There’s also a detune option (DT). Select Algorithm 8 and try some settings to see how the frequency parameters affect the pitch. You’ll see the detune is very subtle. 5

Each operator has its own envelope, and their function really depends on what role the operator plays in the selected Algorithm. Importantly, fully clockwise knob positions are the fastest settings. We’ve set AR at its maximum (31), DR(0), SL(0), SR(8), RR(2) and RS(3) for fast attack and slower release. 6

The envelope sections also include SSG-EG (software-controlled sound generator) options that can modify the envelopes. Use the arrows to page through the eight settings. Here we’ve selected the first option (Repeat Normal). By adjusting our decay to DR(7), we can hear the envelope repeating when a note is held.
