Wall of lightning on a Greek island
CHRIS KOTSIOPOULOS set out to photograph a serene lunar eclipse – but was treated to this spectacular light show.
A wall of lightning, dwarfing the Greek island of Ikaria, is the result of 70 exposures stiched together.
But despite displays such as this, the Greek islands don’t come close to being crowned Earth’s lightning capital.
That title goes to Lake Maracaibo in north-west Venezuela.
Satellites detect on average about 297 nocturnal thunderstorms per year over the lake.
