Cosmos

FROM THE PUBLISHER

- CHUCK SMEETON Publisher

WELCOME to issue 84 of Cosmos magazine. I hope you find it as entertaining and informative as the team here did putting it together. I’d also like to let you know about a few changes that have taken place over the past couple of months.

For starters, our former Editor Andrew Masterson has moved on to new challenges, and I’d like to thank him for the contribution he has made. He has been a wonderful asset for The Royal Institution of Australia, looking after both the magazine and cosmosmagazine.com.

With his departure I would like to welcome a new editorial team who will be fully in place for the next issue.

Ian Connellan will take over as Editor. He has served as the Editor-in-Chief of Australian Geographic Group Publications and editor of Australian Geographic magazine, a trustee and treasurer of the Australian Geographic Society, and an author of Lonely Planet guide books.

Gail MacCallum will take on the role as Managing Editor. Gail has been chief subeditor and editor of the Summer Reading edition at The Bulletin magazine, a book publisher, and also deputy editor at a variety of magazines, including Australian Geographic.

They have a wealth of experience in all things STEM and, together with the rest of the team at Cosmos, are excited to bring you more of the science of everything.

Appointments such as Ian and Gail are very important for The Royal Institution of Australia as an organisation that promotes STEM. We have lofty goals around instilling in young Australians the value of a career in STEM, and Cosmos – in both its print and digital forms – is an integral component in achieving success.

We feel that the way our products work together is our strength – from SCINEMA, our international science film festival, through our education portal and Australia’s Science Channel – and the ability to reach a broad audience and excite and inspire is the key.

All our products continue to evolve to meet your needs and we look forward to sharing the journey with you.
