TOOLS DOWN

I do absolutely love what I do, which is being a partner in a plant nursery for the past 34 years. It’s run with organic principles and includes a shop selling recycled treasures in a little cottage on the nursery grounds. I love them both but sometimes it does get overwhelming. Then help arrives in the form of Country Style magazine... just in the nick of time. I’m rejuvenated, re-energised, reinspired. Phew! Gayle Smith, MOGO, NSW

FRUITFUL MEMORIES

I am sitting on my verandah with my coffee and April edition. Reading ‘A Slow Beauty’, the story of a young family who moved to Hahndorf, has my mind wandering back to the 13 months my family spent living in the Adelaide Hills, with frequent weekend drives to Hahndorf. My mouth watered at the mention of the children picking plums and apples. We too had apple trees, the fruit was smaller than supermarket produce but they were delicious. Not to mention the beautiful apple pies sold at roadside stalls. Thank you Alia and Country Style for the memories. Cheryl Attwood, ROSEMOUNT, QUEENSLAND

CREATIVE OUTLET

I love Country Style. As your cover states, it allows me to escape the everyday, which we all need to do sometimes. The gorgeous homes and stories never fail to inspire me. I’d like to thank Annabelle Hickson for inspiring me with her March article ‘Dignity in the Doing’. I have a young baby, and my creative time has been sorely lacking. When bub was at my mum’s house recently, I grabbed paper, crayons and a camera, and began exploring some difficult emotions. Once I’d released that pain, I was then able to find the joy in my life that I hadn’t felt for a while — by expressing this on paper, with tonnes of vibrant colour, and taking some photographs of the beauty I saw around me. I felt revitalised and refreshed for hours. Paulie Cole, SHEPPARTON, VICTORIA

WINNER A MOMENT TO YOURSELF

I’m pegging out yet another load of washing, because I’ve managed to get my two-year-old and six-month-old to have a sleep at the same time. The silence is broken only by a passing car, a chirping bird or a bark from one of our kelpies. I ask myself: “Why are you doing this when you have a moment to yourself?” I look over to the open copy of Country Style on my dining table, which looks more like a workbench. After making a cuppa, I soon sit down to the overdue respite provided to me by the pages of February’s issue. Karen Saunders, LISMORE, VICTORIA
