MEET THE PRODUCER
Richard Gunner, Feast! Fine Foods, SA
Richard Gunner’s work is about getting fantastic meat from the farm to our plates. It began when Richard was a young economics graduate working on the family farm, Wanderribby, in the Coorong, on SA’S south-east coast. “We were among the first to trademark Angus with our Coorong Angus Beef, and produced something unique in that windy, sandy, salty environment,” he says. Richard established a reputation for the quality of his beef, as well as saltbush-fed Suffolk lamb and free-range Berkshire pigs, and in the past 15 years has also built up a chain of butchers, Feast! Fine Foods, with stores in Adelaide and Victor Harbor, as well as a wholesale business that supplies top restaurants, such as Orana and Hentley Farm in SA, and Brae in Victoria. Richard has spent the past seven years reintroducing English Longhorn cattle to Australia. “The breed had died out here, but when I learnt that chefs consider it the best beef in the world, well…” The project hasn’t been straightforward. “It’s been exceptionally challenging,” Richard says. “English Longhorn are a large, slow-growing breed — and they’re not very fertile. There’s a reason that breeds die out.” (08) 8188 4666; feastfinefoods.com.au
