DOUBLE-DUTY BEAUTY
When it comes to design, the laundry is often down the pecking order for both budget and potential wow-factor, but when it directly connects to a kitchen and is almost always in view, it becomes a lot more important. As part of a renovation of a four-bedroom home, this serene space needed to function both as a laundry and a butler’s pantry of sorts for when the home owners, keen cooks, entertained. “There was a huge focus on the kitchen and this connecting space needed to be just as beautiful,” says interior architect Sally Rhys Jones of the brief. To maximise use of the area, the utilities were placed under the bench and an oversized sink was installed for washing larger kitchen items, while floor-to-ceiling cabinets provided plenty of storage. “Under-cabinet lighting adds ambience at night, while the concrete-look bench adds a contemporary feel to the classic scheme. The patterned floor tile, however, was just for fun!” Sally concludes.
